august "reclusion month" was a complete success. in the first 26 days i attended 3 social events with a 10 day stretch in there where i left the apartment only for groceries. but i got a lot of work done and projects feel manageable again which was one of the goals. some of the mental and emotional reassessment i've been wanting happened along the way, naturally, subconsciously and as i hoped. for someone of my disposition so much unchecked time alone can be dangerous (see january - may 2000). there were times i felt i might have been playing chicken with my dysthymia - goading it, daring it to take a tighter grip on my hand and let it lead me where it might. it's important to recognize that it's always there, and to not tease it and to not treat myself as my own singular sociological experiment. sounds obvious, but for me, supremely capable in the art of unfettered self-rationalization, it can be hard to push past the self-made obfuscations once i've built them.

so such a month can and should only end one way: a week-long trip to california replete with friend-seeing, binge-drinking, football-watching, pizza-eating, floor-sleeping, and client-visiting. it was excellent to get back there and reconnect with it as a place and the people there i last saw five months ago. there's no doubt that i miss it and the friends there, but there were no moments that dipped into blind nostalgia. i still remember why i left and what i hope to accomplish here. and for the most part, everyone seemed to be doing excellently. even those who weren't didn't seem on the verge of doing anything regressive. it appears everybody is turning that corner into the people we want to be. that's significant i think.

other notables:

- mike w. has the kegbot working again! a huge congratulations to him. both hardware and software have been re-engineered and i'm looking forward to working on the front-end with him. in the meantime, watch your expertly documented san francisco drinkers here and check back soon for a new design and features.

- of late i've been forced to be a "laundry ninja" which is not a role i particularly like. in shared washer/dryer situations, i prefer it if everyone is conscious of when their clothes are done washing and drying and to promptly remove their laundry. i always find it awkward to arrive and discover another's clothes sitting there. i feel compelled to move them out of my way and then back when i'm done in a manner that the owner could not easily discern the movement, if only because i wouldn't want to feel like someone was groping my unmentionables.

- i recently found out that bret easton ellis' book of short stories the informers has been made into a movie due out this year. for being such a huge ellis fan, i'd think i'd be more excited but the trailer makes me feel pretty ambivalent about it. my first reaction is the movie needs more shannyn sossamon.

- i can't get enough of this song and music/art video: "west coast" by coconut records. yep, that voice is jason schwartzman. thanks to ted for the "nighttiming" remix that got me looking in this direction.

- finally, i have joined a bowling league. it starts next week.
